Natural Alternatives To Antibiotics
Drawing on old wisdom to support modern wellbeing
Once upon a time (1928, to be precise), Penicillin arrived and quite rightly earned its place as a medical marvel. Antibiotics have saved countless lives, and we’re deeply grateful for them.
But fast forward a few decades, and we’ve also learned this: more isn’t always better. Overuse has led to resistant bugs, confused immune systems and bodies that occasionally look around and say, “Hang on… what the hell just happened?”
So these days, many people are gently turning back to nature and some of the old remedies that our grandparents used - not as a replacement for medicine, but as a way of boosting the body’s immune system and supporting the body to do what it does best. Heal. Think of it as teamwork, not rebellion.
Here are a few of the Natural Allies that I first discovered on my own healing journey back from illness. Great natural alternatives to antibiotics that, to this day, are the things I reach for when a dreaded virus attacks. .
Garlic
Small. Pungent. Powerful. Garlic is perhaps the best known natural antibiotic and many claim it can stop infection in its tracks. Used throughout history, Garlic’s broad anti-microbial spectrum means that it combines anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic properties in one food source. Crushed raw and chewed, it packs the biggest punch - but it is also widely available at chemists and health food stores in capsule form - which can make your social life a little less problematic.
Manuka Honey
Nature’s golden multitasker. Raw, unprocessed Manuka honey comes from New Zealand and has long been used to soothe coughs, colds and respiratory infections. Manuka honey is a potent natural antiseptic and contains high levels of methylglyoxal (MGO) that kill bacteria and inhibit their replication. It is also used for wound care, as it creates a moist, acidic, and protective barrier that reduces infection, minimises pain, and promotes healing.
Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
Not just for smug smoothies. Anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and anti-fungal, coconut oil is one of nature’s best ‘germ fighters’. It contains lauric and caprylic acids, which help the body to ward off bacterial and viral infections.
Echinacea
A classic immune cheerleader, Echinacea is one of the best general remedies for helping the body rid itself of infections. Often taken as a tablet or in tincture form, it has traditionally been used to help the body deal with infections and is often effective against both bacterial and viral attacks.
Live Yoghurt (or Probiotics)
As 60-70% of our immunce system is located in the gut, keeping it happy matters. Live yoghurt or probiotic supplements help replenish the good bacteria that everyday stress (and yes, antibiotics) can wipe out.

Key Takeaway
This isn’t about ditching doctors or declaring war on modern medicine.
It’s about listening to your body, supporting it where you can, and remembering that nature has been quietly doing its thing long before we got busy with prescription pads. For me Growing Well means being curious, balanced and kind to yourself - and sometimes that can start with what’s already in your kitchen.
